Stars don’t ask for permission to shine
Why do we hold back from celebrating ourselves? Is it society or voices from our past telling us to not “be boastful” or “toot my own horn”? We can take a lesson from toddlers who are proud of things they do. I love seeing a little one with her hands on her hips grinning from ear to ear proclaiming something she just tackled or just proclaiming her presence.
When was the last time you embraced child-like pride in something you accomplished or simply celebrated who you are? Is it easier to celebrate something we’ve accomplished? If it is, go for it!
We all have unique gifts and talents that make us special. I remember when I was asked shortly after my divorce to share things that made me who I am. I’m sad to say I only came up with two. I kept repeating, “I’m nice…I’m kind.” At that low time in my life, not surprisingly, I was questioning so many things including who I was and why someone would like me.
What helped to boost my confidence was identifying what made me special. I’ve found that I was not alone. I’ve learned we need to embrace what makes us unique and awesome. Like the first time I tackled this exercise, many women resist or struggle to come up with a list of characteristics that make them special. Trust me, it helps to have a reminder.
Now, I challenge you like I challenge my clients to make your “Awesome List.”
- Start with a list of adjectives of your characteristics
- Then move on to other things that make you who you are.
- Don’t stop until you get to 50 (Yes 50! You can do it!)
- If you struggle, think of compliments you’ve received.
- Or, think of what a friend or loved one might say
- If you really get stuck, ask someone close to you what makes you awesome.
- Put the list in a place you will see it regularly to remind you that you are AWESOME!
It’s time to let your light shine and celebrate YOU!
